Solar electricity systems capture the sun’s energy using photovoltaic (PV) cells. The cells convert the sunlight into electricity, which can be used to run household appliances and lighting.
PV cells don’t need direct sunlight to work – you can still generate some electricity on a cloudy day.

Costs for installing a solar electricity system vary a lot – an average system (2.2kW) costs around £12,000 (including VAT at 5%). Per kW, solar electricity systems can cost in the region of £4,500 to £8,000 per kW, but costs per kW should reduce as system size increases.
In general:
Savings can be considerable – around 1 tonne of CO2 a year. A 2.2 kWp system can generate around 40% of a household’s yearly electricity needs. If the system is eligible to receive the Feed In Tariff it could generate savings and income of around £900 per year.
Maintenance is generally small – you’ll need to keep the panels relatively clean and make sure trees don’t begin to overshadow them.

To tell if solar electricity is right for you, there are a few key questions to consider:
Do you have a sunny place to put it?
You’ll need a roof or wall that faces within 90 degrees of south, and isn’t overshadowed by trees or buildings. If the surface is in shadow for parts of the day, your system will generate less energy.
Is your roof strong enough?
Solar panels are not light and the roof must be strong enough to take their weight, especially if the panel is placed on top of existing tiles. If in doubt, ask a construction expert or an installer.
Do you need planning permission?
In England, Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland, you don’t need planning permission for most home solar electricity systems, as long as they’re below a certain size – but you should check with your local planning officer, especially if your home is a listed building, or is in a conservation area or World Heritage Site.
Reducing your carbon foot print:
The following is a list of items that may take an initial investment, but should pay for themselves over the course of 1-4 years through savings on your energy bills.

The current lifespan of a boiler is around 12 years. Fitting an A-rated high efficiency condensing boiler with the correct heating and hot water controls can make a huge difference to your heating bills over time.
Below are typical savings which can be achieved by replacing boilers with new A-rated condensing models and installing a full set of heating controls:

Are you unsure about what your client is asking you to do with regard to their electrical installation? As importantly, is your client unsure about what you are providing, without wishing to make a formal complaint to your Registration Body or building control.
If so, why not invite us to undertake an inspection of the work done so far so as to establish whether or not the completed installation will meet the requirements of BS 7671-2008 , The Wiring Regulations and also the building regulations.
An ‘Inspection on demand’ is a constructive and helpful way in which both contractor and client can achieve a satisfactory conclusion to any difference in opinion of design etc without necessarily becoming involved in formal complaints, or worse, legal action.
SRG can also offer advise to clients on electricians within their homes and also the task of beginning a prosecution against a rogue electrician. SRG has seen successful cases won against a number of non payment clients and also guidance in the prosecution of electrical companies practising under false credentials.
